The American television comedy The Office was renewed by NBC for a sixth season on January 15, 2009. The first episode aired on September 17 and there was a one-hour special on October 8. The episodes will air on Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. EDT apart of Comedy Night Done Right. Although Pam's mother previously appeared in the season two episode "Sexual Harassment," the role was recast, with Linda Purl at Pam and Jim's wedding in the Niagara episode. The sixth season will continue the American adaptation of the British TV series of the same name as a mockumentary portraying the daily lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictitious Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

Story arcs in the sixth season include Jim becoming co-manager with Michael of the Scranton branch, Michael dating Pam's mother, Dwight attempting to get Jim fired, and Dunder Mifflin facing an uncertain future due to rumors of insolvency, eventually becoming part of a larger corporation called Sabre. The season also prominently features the long-awaited wedding between Jim and Pam. Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Kathy Bates will appear in a multi-episode arc, playing the CEO of the company that buys Dunder Mifflin.
