The Biggest Loser is an American reality game show that debuted on NBC October 19, 2004. A ninth season renewed the series beginning on January 5, 2010 at 8PM ET/PT and ended on May 25, 2010. Season 10 began filming on May 24, 2010 and is the first season to film in high definition. Season 11 premiered on January 4, 2011.

The premise of the show is that obese people become contestants competing to win $250,000 (originally $100,000) by losing the highest percentage of weight. Originally, the winner was to lose the highest amount of weight in pure numbers, but with Season 1, Episode 7, this was changed to the highest percentage of weight so that women would have a chance. The first season began with 12 contestants, while the second season began with 14. The third season began with 50 contestants, one from each state (14 on the Ranch). The fourth season began with 18 contestants divided into 3 teams. The fifth season began with ten teams of two people each, and the sixth seasons began with 8 teams of two. The seventh & ninth seasons began with 11 teams of two. The 8th season saw the return of the original format, with individuals competing for the grand prize. But like the previous 3 seasons, they were divided up into teams of two, with each contestant choosing a team partner.
